Our Monthly Budget & Goal Check-In

We all have heard the old saying, “If you you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” While most of us create goals of some sort, if we don’t regularly check in on those goals it’s likely that we won’t accomplish them. My husband and I create goals at the end of each year. We did a video on this last year. You can find that HERE. But we have to regularly meet to keep each other accountable. When we were first working to get out of debt (about 10 years ago) we used to call these meetings Money Mondays. During this time we usually got paid each Sunday and our income varied greatly week to week. So each Monday we sat down and looked at our budget. This has evolved to the first Monday and each month.

In THIS video we give you a lot of info on what we talk about. But here are the highlights.

  1. Goals. This is a check in on the goals we create for the year.

    1. Where are we at?

    2. Is this goal still relevant? Should we change it?

    3. What is our action plan? Where are we at in the process of accomplishing this.

    4. Accountability? How can we help each other in reaching these goals?

  2. Financial/Budget

    1. What did last month look like? Do we need to change our spending in some areas?

    2. What is our budget this month?

    3. Are there upcoming changes or expenses we need to be aware of?

    4. Where are we at in our financial goals.

I had a lot of fun talking about this with Lane. It’s hard to keep a straight face sometimes when we are supposed to be talking about something serious. I will share a big truth with you. We saw almost no progress on until we found ourselves on the same page. Sometimes it’s hard to sit down and talk about finances and goals with your spouse. This is especially true if you’re in a tight season. But it is so very important. So have the hard conversations! Sit down for even 5-10 minutes and talk about where you are at and where you want to be. It will change your marriage! And if you’re single, find an accountability partner to help you along this journey of life.
