We have our phones with us all the time. Even if I don’t bring my purse in with me to a store, I bring my phone! Our phones can really overtake our lives, but they don’t have to. Today we are going to set some goals for us to reclaim our time. These are just a few tips that have helped me.
Have a home base for the phones in your home. I usually plug my phone in on the kitchen counter. This allows me to know where it is, but also not carry it around during the day.
Set a downtime on your phone. My phone automatically limits notifications after a certain time in the evenings. I have emergency numbers that will bypass that. I have an iPhone and it’s super easy to set this feature up in settings.
Take a day that you decide to unplug from your phone. I have been doing this a lot more lately with portions of my day and I am loving it! A digital free day is a relief to our system that is constantly bombarded with notices.
Have accountability. Share your screen time with a friend and keep each other accountable. Another option is to journal about your screen time. When do you find you are picking it up? How do you feel when you’re away from your phone? Writing these thoughts down can help us to see a better way to creating heathy habits.
Create family rules. No phones in your room past 9. My son is 18 now, but for most of his life we did not allow any technology in his bedroom. No phones at the table is one I love. When it’s time to eat dinner I want us all to be fully present. Whatever your desire is for your family, sit down and discuss it with them. Creating these family rules together can help them to buy into this digital detox.
After recording this video I read the brand new book The Unplugged Hours. I highly recommend this book! It has really created some thought about my time on my devices.
Let me know how your time on your devices changes after you become intentional about it? I know I saw a huge shift when I just started paying more attention.
