Tips For Creating A Gift Box

I love creating gift baskets or gift boxes. I make a gift basket/bag/box if someone is staying at our home or if we have put a guest up in a hotel. I also have the honor of creating baskets for some events that happen a few times a year.

When a guest walks in your guest room or a hotel room, a gift basket or bag is a big welcome sign and lets them know they are important and you’re glad they’re there!

  1. Ask what your guest/ gift recipients food allergies and preferences are.

When I am doing this for a guest speaker coming to our church or for another guest I send a simple form that asks a few questions so I can know what things they like, what food allergies they may have, or if they have foods they just really dislike. You can find a PDF of that Google Form HERE. (It’s super simple to create your own Google Form!)

  2. How long is the guest staying? If it’s just one night, you don’t to overwhelm them. How many people? Is this a couple or a family? If it’s a family I like to add something that they kiddos will know are just for them.

  3. What I include:

    • Sweet - Even if someone’s on a special diet you can add a sweet treat to the basket. A specialty chocolate bar is a go to for me.

    • Salty - nuts, something crunchy.

    • Drink - Bottled water and any other drink they may prefer. If I have access to the room I like to put the drinks in the refrigerator. You can put them straight in or leave them in a gift bag.

    • Something local - I love to add a local touch to the gift. Here are some things I have added in the past:

      1. A tea towel with our city on it.

      2. A Starbucks mug from my state or city.

      3. Local honey.

      4. Handmade soap that was locally made.

  4. When you determine the container your gift is in, you want to think about how your guest is traveling. If they are traveling you want a collapsible container or one that can be thrown away. If they are driving you can use something a little more rigid.

You can create a basket or box as large or small as you need. You can do this on a small or large budget. There are times I have guests and only have a bottle of water and a bar of good chocolate on their nightstand. Any gift is a kind gesture to let your guest know you are glad they are there!
