5 Easy Ways to Minimize Your Closet

Our closet is a place we are in at least 2 times a day! I hear from so many of you that you find it overwhelming. Here are 5 very easy ways to minimize your closet! Check out the YouTube video HERE.

  1. Backwards hangers. If you’re looking for an approach that will take almost zero time upfront, this is your way! All you need to do is go into your closet and flip all of your hangers backwards. Instead of having them facing you on the rod, flip them around. At the end of 12 months, anything that is still backwards needs to leave. You know you haven’t worn this in at least 12 months.

  2. 12 month rule. If you’re looking for a similar approach, but want it done TODAY. Then go through your closet and just ask yourself, did I wear this in the last 12 months? If the answer is no, let it go!

  3. The Maybe Zone. When we help clients minimize their closets, I suggest 3 categories. Keep, Toss, and Maybe. The Maybe Zone is for those pieces that you just aren’t sure about. You think you want to keep them, but they aren’t a 100% yes. Create a “maybe” zone in your closet. Try to keep it as small as possible. Force yourself to choose from this area first when you are choosing an outfit. This will make you put it on your body and make a decision as whether you will wear it or not. If you decide it’s not for you, don’t put it back in your closet, let it go!

  4. Create a No Buy time period. Don’t buy anything for a certain period of time. You can choose 3, 6, or 12 months. This will force you to see what you actually wear. Many times we get ready for an event or vacation and feel like we have nothing to wear so we buy something new. If we don’t want to wear the things in our closet, we need to let them go. If we buy new things to replace something, we need to let the old thing go.

  5. Have a best friend try on party! This is a fun way to quickly purge your closet. You need to find that friend (for me it’s my sister) that you trust and know the will be kind, but brutally honest with you. Try on the clothes you aren’t 100% sure on and if it doesn’t work, let it go! It’s even better if that friend is a similar size to you and you can send them home with some new clothes!

Which method will you choose?
