10 Things I’ve Simplified In My Home

When I set out on this minimalism journey I knew I planned to simplify the things in my home. I truly had no idea how far reaching this would be or how much it would help me to simplify my entire home. Here are 10 things I’ve simplified in my home since becoming a minimalist. Check out THIS YouTube video where I go in depth into each of these categories.

  1. Cleaning supplies

    • I no longer buy a mirade of supplies. I don’t try new ones out because I’ve found what works. And I use a few simple ingredients for everything.

    • Branch Basics - I use this natural product for cleaning my bathroom. HERE is a link to save on your first order.

    • Kitchen all purpose cleaner - I love using one simple cleaner for my kitchen counters and any other surface. I make this myself with one squirt of Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds in a glass bottle with a few drops my favorite essential oils.

  2. Kitchen gadgets - I don’t want to clutter my cabinets up with gadgets that only do one thing. I like tools that have many uses.

  3. Bath and Beauty products

    • I don’t need 20 different products. I’ve found the ones that work and purchase those over and over. I also share some with my daughter rather than have a lot of different products for each of us.

    • Shower products - family friendly rather than one specific for men or women or even kids.

  4. Linens - bedding and towels

    • 2 sheet sets per bed.

    • When I get fresh towels, I donate the old ones.

    • Limit throw blankets and extra bedding

  5. Seasonal decor

    • I go big for Christmas. And have minimized that to 4 bins. So yes, you can still have the things you love, just be sure you only keep what you actually use.

    • Fall - I used to decorate a lot for this season, but felt it begin to feel cluttered. I am down to one bin and love the simple fall touches in my home.

    • All other holiday and seasons are in one bin. I decorate one place in the kitchen for those extra holidays.

  6. Toys - This is a category I have to simplify over and over. But it has made a huge impact in my home to simplify this category.

  7. Paper/Files - I actually started this journey of simplifying files a few years before I found minimalism. This has made a HUGE difference in my life. HERE is a video on my paperless file system.

  8. Wrapping supplies - I no longer have wrapping paper or gift bags for each event. Instead I use a simple paper and change out the ribbon. I buy bags like THESE and they work for any celebration!

  9. Laundry supplies - I now only use dryer balls and only one type of detergent, no matter the load. My current favorite non toxic detergent is Molly Suds.

  10. Clothing - Our closets stay so much more organized and I no longer feel overwhelmed when I go to get clothes out of my daughter’s closet now that we’ve simplified her clothing.

I could go on for days on how each of these has made a positive difference in my life by being simplified. I have blog posts and videos where I go in depth on each category. Simplifying these 10 areas has added margin in my life.
